Gossip Girl’s Ultimate Lesson: True Power Comes from Self-Worth

No one does friendship drama like Gossip Girl. But beneath the scandals, designer wardrobes, and high society, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen were more than just frenemies. Their relationship was a masterclass in self-worth, power struggles, and emotional growth.

If you’ve ever had a friendship where power dynamics played out—where one person seemed to “effortlessly shine” while the other had to fight for recognition—this one’s for you.

👑 Serena’s Big 3: Why She’s a Chaotic Queen

Serena van der Woodsen is the definition of effortless charm. She would waltz in (and out) of people’s lives with an ease that was envied by many. She’s magnetic, wild, and one of the most unreliable characters in the series. One moment she’s running away to a new city, the next she’s acting like nothing happened. But why is she like this?

Her Big 3 explains everything:

  • Sagittarius Sun → Runs from responsibility, craves adventure, hates feeling tied down.
  • Leo Rising → Naturally admired, always in the spotlight, loves attention but won’t admit it.
  • Gemini Moon → Emotionally restless, can be a little detached, doesn’t even know what she wants half the time.

In true Leo fashion, Serena seems confident, but truthfully, she relies on external validation and bases her entire personality on it. She gets attention without trying but when things get too real, and require more depth from her, she disappears.

👑 Blair Waldorf’s Big 3: Why She’s the Ultimate Power Player

More than anything in the world, Blair wants admiration and respect. In fact, she demands it. She works extremely hard to be the queen bee of the Upper East Side.

Unlike Serena—who breezes through life effortlessly—Blair carefully curates every aspect of her existence to maintain power. But why does she feel the need to control everything? Why does she constantly clash with Serena, who seems to get everything without trying?

A deep fear of not being good enough.

Her Big 3 explains it all:

  • ♎ Libra Sun → The queen of social power, obsessed with beauty, relationships, and fairness (on her terms). Can be obsessed with having the “perfect” image.
  • ♑ Capricorn Moon → Emotionally reserved, ambitious, deeply insecure, constantly proving herself.
  • ♏ Scorpio Rising → Intense, manipulative, drawn to power plays, thrives in secrecy and strategy.

Blair’s Scorpio rising really is the star of her chart, to me. Blair’s entire identity is built on control. Yes, she craves love (Libra Sun), but she doesn’t trust it (Capricorn Moon). She also has   amazing instinct—she knows how to play the long game and outmaneuver everyone.

👑 Blair and Serena’s Complicated Friendship: A Self-Worth Roller Coaster

Both girls are deeply insecure. We know that Serena gets everything that she wants with ease but we also know that she is obsessed with the way that she’s perceived which highlights her low self-worth and lack of personal power. She gives so much of her power away, which is something that Blair can’t understand, and also feels that she can’t afford to do. Remember, she has to work for everything and often overcompensates for her insecurity by trying to control everything.

🌟 My Advice to Blair and Serena

Serena: If I were a cast member in the show I would gift Serena with the book The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi. I would remind her that her self-worth is inherent and that she’s free to live authentically.

Blair: I would tell Blair that she does not have to earn love. She was worthy of it the moment she entered the world, and she’ll always be worthy of it. I would give her this therapist recommended Self-Love Journal so that she could begin the process of validating herself. I’d also recommend self-love subliminals so that she could rewire her mind.

I would also recommend therapy for both girls.

🖤 Final Takeaway: True Personal Power Comes from Within

At the end of the day, both Blair and Serena were searching for the same thing: validation.

But true personal power? It doesn’t come from control (Blair) or effortless charm (Serena). It comes from within. It’s the unshakable belief that you are enough—with or without the spotlight.
